Scaling & Root Planing

Also known as a “deep cleaning”, scaling and root planing is performed to remove plaque and calculus (tartar or the hard deposits that form on teeth) and other bacterial toxins from periodontal pockets and to smooth roots to prevent future adherence of plaque, calculus and toxins. Scaling and root planing is often performed as a first step in the treatment of periodontitis.

Benefits of treatment include reduction of bacterial infection above and below the gums, restoration of gum attachment, prevention of further disease progression (gum and bone loss), reduction in inflammation and bleeding, promotion of easier at home and in office care and long-term stability.

Scaling and root planing is occasionally coupled with other therapies such as antibiotic therapy and is often coupled with periodontal maintenance to reinforce and maintain the removed plaque and calculus and other bacterial toxins from periodontal pockets and sustain the tissue reattachment achieved following scaling and root planing.
