Types of Bone Grafting for Implant Placement
Extraction & Ridge Preservation
- Extraction is performed when a tooth cannot be saved due to extensive cavities, infection, or trauma. The tooth is removed with precision to preserve the surrounding bone and gum tissue.
- Ridge preservation is most often performed at the time of extraction. Bone grafting maintains healthy bone and gum structure, prepares the site for future implant placement, preserves facial shape, and supports adjacent remaining teeth or implants.
Ridge Augmentation
- When bone width or volume has been lost due to periodontal disease, denture wear, developmental defects, trauma, or tooth loss, ridge augmentation rebuilds the shape of the jaw, restoring its natural contour, strength, and volume for long-term implant success.

Sinus Augmentation
- The posterior maxilla (upper and back jaw) often has insufficient bone quality and quantity due to anatomy and the adjacent maxillary sinus. When bone or tooth loss occurs in this area, the sinus can expand into the space once occupied by teeth.
- A sinus augmentation, or sinus lift surgery, gently raises the sinus membrane and adds bone so that dental implants placed in the area are properly supported and secure.
